I have a very easy solution to stop food industry factory farm animal abuse and ocean over-fishing:

Politicians need to pass laws that require 24/7 live video cameras of all areas where animals are kept in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO), also known as Factory Farms. The law should also allow surprise on-site inspections of any CAFO, Factory Farm, or facility so independent animal rights inspectors can evaluate the conditions of the animals and their living facilities. People have a right to see the true conditions of where their food products come from:

  1. Do the animals live in humane and sanitary conditions? Any unhealthy and unsanitary issues of urine/feces, germs, disease, etc.?
  2. Are the animals confined to tiny, cramped cages or extremely crowded warehouses? Do the animals get sunlight and fresh air, or are they kept in dark, closed warehouses?
  3. Do the animals suffer from abuse and torture by the factory farm employees or living conditions? Do the animals endure abuse, suffering and torture from the day they are born until they are slaughtered years later?

Cameras with 24/7 real-time videos are a very inexpensive and easy solution that benefits all the animals and consumers. The live videos must be online for anyone to view at any time to see what is happening to the animals that are used for food products. This law should also apply to animals kept for research purposes for consumer or medical products.

Video cameras should also be required by law on commercial fishing boats to prevent over-fishing and other illegal activity in the oceans. The cameras would take live video of all areas on the boats where fish and ocean species are hauled in and stored. If the boats go too far out to sea to have live video connections via satellite or internet, then all commercial fishing boats should be required to have a "black box recorder" that saves the videos. When the boats return to shore, the black box recorders would then automatically connect to the internet and upload the recorded videos for anyone to view.

This is the number of animals killed for food worldwide by the meat, egg, dairy, and fish industries DURING THE TIME YOU ARE VIEWING THIS PAGE!! The numbers are reset to zero when you leave this page. They do NOT include the millions of dogs and cats killed in animal shelters every year. These numbers do NOT include the millions of animals killed each year in vivisection laboratories. They do NOT include the animals killed while forced into blood sports like bullfighting, cockfighting, dog-fighting, and bear-baiting. They do NOT include horses and greyhounds killed after they were no longer deemed suitable for racing. They do NOT include the animals who died while held captive in circuses, rodeos, zoos, and marine parks. Please eat more plant-based vegetarian food to improve your own health and reduce animal suffering worldwide!! Plant-based food is much healthier food than animal-based food!

The Animal Kill Counter was first posted in late May 2008 by Barna Mink, on a website called SFVegan. In September 2008 the Kill Counter was updated by the ADAPTT website by streamlining its code and adding a rough estimation of 90 billion marine animals killed annually worldwide for food. In November 2008 Action for Animals posted on their blog a significantly improved, more comprehensive version with more specific description of the animals slaughtered. In July 2011 ADAPTT supplemented the Kill Counter with estimated kills of dogs and cats for food, chiefly in Asian countries. It is also important to remember all the animals in the meat, dairy and egg industries who are killed but never eaten because their remains go to waste.

Data for the Kill Counter are based on worldwide animal slaughter statistics culled from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the year 2003. According to these statistics, about 53 billion land animals are slaughtered annually worldwide. (It should be noted that at the time the numbers were compiled, they were the minimum numbers of animals killed each year. The actual numbers may be significantly greater insofar as some countries or territories either did not report, or deliberately excluded, some statistics.) Of the more than 200 countries researched, the top three - the United States, China, and Brazil - consume a staggering 46 percent of these animals as food. The United States alone consumes roughly 20 percent of all animals slaughtered for food even though it contains less than five percent of the world's population.

It's important to note that, since most of the available data are now multiple years old, these estimates are extremely conservative. The current kill rates are much higher than what is indicated here. Periodically check the ADAPTT website since they post more accurate statistics as they become available. ADAPTT pledges to update its Kill Counter accordingly.
